From April 12-14, I was in Ibadan, Nigeria for a very exciting meeting. I joined more than two hundred international and national partners from countries across Africa, including leaders from the African Development Bank (AfDB) and CGIAR centers, policy makers and the private sector to discuss a new initiative, “Africa Feeding Africa” or Technologies for African Agricultural Transformation (TAAT). This week I was joined in New Delhi, India by CGIAR centers’ leaders and national program partners including our most important partner and host ICAR that was represented by the new Director General Dr. Trilochan Mohapatra as well as ICAR’s Deputy Director General of Crops Dr. JS Sandhu.
The gathering was to discuss site integration in India, which is part of the CGIAR’s larger efforts to identify national priorities and planned activities so we can align our CGIAR Research Program (CRP) proposals to support demand-driven innovation and effectiveness by optimizing our resources for impact in India through site integration plans. This past weekend I had the privilege to meet and learn from women farmers in northern Mozambique and Salima District of Malawi. I was so impressed and proud that ICRISAT technologies, such as improved groundnut, pigeonpea and more recently sorghum varieties, are empowering women to earn more income. This in turn is giving women control over their financial resources so they can send their children to school and improve the nutrition of their families. Read more
On February 16-17th I joined hundreds of leaders from around the world at the Global Forum for Innovations in Agriculture (GFIA) in Abu Dhabi. It was a great opportunity for ICRISAT and its partners to forge new partnerships and find ways to use innovation to address malnutrition, environmental sustainability and most importantly ensure farmers are commercially viable.
